Rabbi Alan Berlin has served Temple Beth-El as Executive Director since April 20, 2009. Before coming to San Antonio, he served for more than a decade at Temple Solel in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Following his ordination at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1996, Rabbi Berlin joined the Phoenix area congregation first as Assistant Rabbi, then Associate Rabbi, and was ultimately named Senior Rabbi of that synagogue upon his predecessor's retirement. Upon moving to San Antonio with his wife, Cantor Julie Berlin, and their three children - Daniel, Hannah, and Jordan - Rabbi Berlin decided to explore opportunities outside the full-time congregational rabbinate. At that time, Rabbi Berlin served a small congregation in Mandeville, Louisiana, across Lake Ponchartrain from New Orleans, on an interim, bi-weekly basis. He also served in a fundraising capacity with State Representative Mike Villarreal.
