We live in a civilization that has as its primary trait a lack of permanence. New Math is hopelessly outdated. State-of-the-art technology is deemed junk before the final payment is made. Tastes, styles, even values, seem to change from year to year, rather than from generation to generation or era to era. It has been suggested that our generation suffers from “future shock” – the stress and disorientation caused by too much change in too short a time. It is perhaps, then, not surprising that our faith, encompassing 4,000 years of wisdom, appears even more necessary in our everyday lives. In San Antonio, we have been fortunate for 125 years that Temple Beth-El has been our source of permanence, our link to the wisdom of our faith, and, indeed, our home. It is in dedication to that 125 years of service that we present this history of Temple Beth-El.
