“The study of Torah is equal to
them all because it leads to them all.”
-Gates of Prayer based on Pirke Avot
During recent years, the number of adult educational opportunities at Temple Beth-El have increased greatly. The Temple has instituted an Adult Hebrew Program and an Adult B’nai Mitzvah Program. Our Congregation has both an Introduction to Judaism Program for those who wish intensive instruction in Judaism and a Taste of Judaism Program for those who want a shorter introduction.
Adult education classes are held several times a week at night, at lunchtime on Tuesdays, in the morning for Women’s Torah Study, on Shabbat morning before services and on Sunday morning in connection with the Religious School. Perhaps one of the most significant facets of learning at Temple Beth-El occurs during our Shabbat services. Temple Beth-El is one of the few Congregations where the weekly Torah portion is not only read, but also translated and discussed, by our Rabbis and by our B’nai Mitzvah and by other members.
Temple Beth-El also boasts a fine library overseen with much dedication by Sylvia and Hilton Goldman. It includes more than 10,000 volumes, a full listening center with audio cassettes, video cassettes, books on tape and records. Care has been taken to include in its collection materials for members of every age and reading ability, including large-print books. What is not known by many Temple members is that our library is also our archive for 125 years of Temple history. It contains such unique items as the architectural plans used during the 1927 construction.
Future plans include computer cataloging of all material, beginning with archival material, increased computer and Internet access and a program to transfer important memorabilia into more secure formats.
