The Beth-El Players, a San Antonio-based theatre production company, sponsored by Temple Beth-El, is a group of talented, energetic, hard-working and enthusiastic people who are involved in every aspect of theatre. They produce dramatic, comedic, and/or musical plays often based on, but not limited to, Jewish folktales and Midrash. Before each production, the Players hold open auditions. If you are interested in renting one of many original scripts, call Linda Kaufman at 493-3910. Some of the Players' more recent productions have included:
It's All About Hats, in which the Players teamed up with Star Productions' director Rachelle Neuman who wrote and directed the script with music by Linda Kaufman. This musical was based on the Red Hat Ladies, and ran during the summer of 2004. The cast and crew were asked to perform an encore presentation in October, 2005 at a Red Hat Society Convention held here in San Antonio.
Get Gelt or Get Out! written by Brian Billings, Michael Hardy, Kathi Kardon, Linda Kaufman, Lew Richmond, and Diana Samuels, and directed by Michael Hardy. A Hanukkah melodrama, this production took place in December, 2004 and included villains and heroes, popcorn throwing, booing and cheering.
The Three Faces of Yitzhak, written and directed by Rachelle Neuman. A dramatic piece in 3 scenes, this was performed as part of Partnership 2000's Yitzhak Project in Akko, Israel in June of 2005. The play portrays three different Jewish families, each with a Sarah, Abraham and Yitzhak, each during a different time period in which the characters are faced with dilemmas Jews have historically encountered. It will be performed once again as Temple Beth-El's Selichot production in the Oppenheimer Chapel at 9:30 PM on Saturday, September 24, 2005.
