Sisterhood Policies

  1. Sisterhood members are asked to “Remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy.” They are urged to set aside Friday evening for Temple attendance with their families.

  2. Dues are thirty-five dollars ($35.00) annually, payable to Temple Beth-El Sisterhood, and sent to 211 Belknap Place, San Antonio, Texas 78212. Your remittance may include payment for a CALENDAR or a contribution to either of our Sisterhood funds, the HELEN JACOBSON YOUTH EDUCATION FUND or the SISTERHOOD FUND.

  3. Members will please call the Sisterhood’s voice mailbox (733-9135, ext. 153) about any changes in address or telephone number.

  4. UNIONGRAMS and GOLDENGRAMS may be purchased from Sharon Gilreath, 545-2251.

  5. All Sisterhood books shall be audited annually.

  6. The President shall be empowered to expend funds, not to exceed $100.00, at any time an emergency arises.

  7. Sisterhood CALENDARS may be purchased from the Temple Beth-El Office for $10.00 (or $11.00 if mailed).

  8. ONEG SHABBAT FUND contributions should be sent to Temple Beth-El Sisterhood Oneg Shabbat Fund, 211 Belknap Place, San Antonio, Texas 78212.

  9. Members will kindly notify COURTESY CHAIR, Betty Cohen, 322 Royal Oaks (09),824-8294, of all happy and sad events in the families of our members.

  10. The JUDAICA SHOP is open on Sundays during Religious School hours (9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.), Wednesdays from 4:30 to 7:15 p.m., and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. For further information, contact Rachel Gurwitz at 828-3377.

  11. After proper notification to the membership, nominations for Sisterhood’s Or Tamid award (everlasting light) should be submitted in writing to Bobi Stern, 112 Shavano Drive, San Antonio, TX 78231 for review and selection. Consistent and continuous quality of service to Sisterhood shall be used as the criteria in selection. The Honors Committe will consist of at least five past Or Tamid award recipients. (This Committee will not be required to select a Or Tamid recipient annually.) Additionally, there will be up to three Torah Orah awards (light of the Torah), to be decided upon by the Honors Committee and the president. The President’s award will be presented to one woman for outstanding service during her tenure.

  12. Members who make a reservation and fail to attend a meeting where a meal is served will be billed for the event.

  13. Rabbis, Education Director, Administrator, Membership Coordinator and their spouses are to be guests at all Sisterhood functions.

  14. The Helen Jacobson Youth Education Fund was initiated in February 1994 with donor event proceeds. This continuing fund will be held in an account separate from the general fund and maintained by the following:
  15. There shall be babysitting at any and all Sisterhood events.

  16. At the unfortunate time a Sisterhood member passes away, the resolutions chairwoman will locate a Sisterhood member who was close to the deceased member. A resolution will be written and attached to the minutes, a copy will be inserted into a resolutions book which will remain in the library, and a copy will be mailed to the family as a remembrance. The resolutions Chairwoman this year is Felice Wolff.
