Tu B'Shevat is a time to think about the change of seasons, and
start looking forward to spring. (How easy it is for you to do this depends on
how wintery it is where you live!) In Israel, it has become a religious "Arbor
Day" observed with the ritual planting of
trees.
You can celebrate this holiday by planting a tree, or with a Tu
B'Shevat seder. Originally limited to Sephardic Jews, this custom has become
more popular with all Jews. As part of the seder, participants drink four cups
of wine and eat a variety of fruits and nuts.
Did
you know...
·
Tu
B'Shevat is at this time of year because in Israel, this is when the tree sap
starts to flow again.
·
An
alternate, Sephardic name for Tu B'Shevat is
Hamishoshi.
·
Greek
Jewish communities still have the tradition of blessing the seeds for spring
planting. Also, children walk from house to house and are given bags of
fruits.

Get Psyched
It's our first day back in the synagogue, and for some of us it's
our first day of Religious School in the Synagogue. Any suggestions you have, please write
them down. I think it will take a
few Sundays for us to really figure out how to utilize our new space to the best
of our ability. The
classrooms look good, but I'm looking forward to them looking even more cheerful
and inviting. Don't let the
younger grades have all the glory with welcoming and colorful classrooms.
This
Sunday, please be warm, welcoming, smiling, flexible and as helpful as
possible. Let's make this opening
day full of energy, enthusiasm, and caring.
Dismissal
Procedure
Dismissal procedure will remain the same for grades K-2. For Nivi'im through Melachim, you must walk the students out to the front of the building. Make sure that they follow you out to the curb, do not let them run ahead of you. There will be cones set up with grade signs, leading along the curbing heading towards Ashby. Please stand with your students until they are picked up.
The Morning
All Alef through Dalet Hebrew classes
will be canceled on Sunday.
We will be having an assembly/concert for the entire school for the first
30 minutes. Nivi'im through Yisrael
will be staying to learn about the retreat. Tzofim and Melachim will have a special
program in the chapel at 11:30 with Peri.
Hafsaka will be held in your classrooms until we can find a safe place
for your children to play.
