Courageous Conversations: Soundtracks of Change (Hip-Hop In America)

Rap is a uniquely American art form that has spread across the globe. From its earliest inception through today, the voices of rap and hip hop have called out inequality and injustice and shared the stories of marginalized communities. Come explore the intersection of music, rap, and race in America through a multi-media journey through the history of hip hop.

Whether you’re a true B-boy, B-girl or you don’t know your Wu-Tang from your Wiz Khalifa, you’ll come away with a knowledge and appreciation of this uniquely American art form.

This session will be facilitated by Rabbi Andrew Terkel.Rabbi Andrew Terkel is the South Area Manager for NFTY, the Reform teen youth movement. He oversees the four NFTY regions in the south, and also works on aspects of tefilah, songleading, and Israel engagement. He is a product of the Reform movement since his childhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma and his summers spent at URJ Greene Family Camp in Texas. Rabbi Terkel attended the University of Kansas and double majored in Political Science and International Studies, and was active in his campus Hillel. After graduating he worked for the Institute of Southern Jewish Life in Jackson, MS and traveled across the region serving small Jewish communities. He then went to HUC-JIR in Jerusalem and Los Angeles and was ordained in 2014. The first album Rabbi Terkel bought was License to Ill by the Beastie Boys when he was 12 years old, which kicked off a life long love affair with all things hip hop.
